How To Prevent Blocked Drains

Drains frequently blocking?

We’re here to help! Dealing with a blocked drain can be a real hassle at the best of times. That’s why we’ve put together a list of handy tips to help you keep those drains running freely day-to-day.

Be careful with what you pour down them.

Firstly, it’s always better to work with the ethos that prevention is better than the cure. Grease from cooking, coffee grounds, soap scum and even hair are some of the biggest culprits when it comes to blocked sinks or drains. We see it all the time! So, if you keep a watchful eye on what gets tipped, you’ll be able to keep your sink running clean as a whistle!

Use a drain gate.

Stop by your local plumbing store to pick yourself up a handy drain-gate to catch any bigger bits of food waste or hairs that may accidently get into the sink. These may have to be fitted, however, so it might be worth taking along a picture of your drain system so you can be sure to get the right one.

Run hot water after every use.

Pouring hot water down the drain – or just running the hot tap for a bit – keeps all the oils from food running smoothly down, rather than getting stuck to the sides of the pipes. Often these oils start to build up which can lead to blockages, so it’s important to keep them flowing.

Pour a cup of vinegar down the drain.

It might seem strange, but vinegar is actually an excellent cleaner – especially when it comes to a blocked drain. This is because it contains strong acetic acid which can help to dissolve and remove bits of food or oils stuck to the inside of the pipes. Get yourself a small cup of household vinegar and slowly pour it down the drain or sink, letting it sit for around 30 minutes. After that, run some very hot water to help wash it all down.

Still experiencing problems with your sinks and drains that a nice glass of vinegar won’t solve? It might be time to call in the experts.
